If you have an idealistic view of the romantic era that was the "wild west" this book will probably depress you. It is gritty, raw and reflects the time far better than most western stories. It's a well-written, professionally executed story with characters that you'll find engaging, if not always endearing. Deadwood tells the story of the west from the perspective of those who knew that most streets were muddy morasses when it rained and the odors were so distinctive that it was possible to tell what part of town you were in simply by the odor that assaulted your nose most. Calamity Jane is one of those larger-than-life characters we've all read about, but this will likely be the first time you'll ever read that her odor, not her celebrity, preceded her more often than not.
It's a great western yarn, but it's definitely not a white hat/black moral play.

Deadwood Pete Dexter 9781400079711 Books Reviews

Having visited Deadwood and surrounding area, I enjoyed the descriptions of various locations. I also liked the depiction of Calamity Jane and her unrequited love for Wild Bill. The character of Swearingen was different from his portrayal in the series Deadwood, but I'm sure the producers of the series took a lot of license. Overall, I felt the book to be enjoyable and informative.
I loved this book. I also loved the HBO series. It is so fascinating to be able to peek at how some people lived in that time in history. It was brutal, uncomfortable, difficult, and dangerous. The author puts us right down amongst the dirt and fear with explicit detail and doesn't whitewash anything. I felt very sad for some of the characters who couldn't rise above their weaknesses or escape their destiny. Great writing, authentic and believable.
I loved Deadwood, the HBO series, and was disappointed when it ended ... then I found Deadwood by Pete Dexter and was able to rediscover satisfaction through this riveting journey. The writing was superb, the dialect of the time on point. I wish this hadn't ended either, but am grateful for the experience.
i love those writers who expect their readers to think, to fill in, to keep a running score of what people say about the same events & how to go about judging them. Helps keeping score as to liars & facts. Great characters, & detail down to the period clothing, toilet, body odor, bath availability, costs, & the ease a man or woman could die. Dexter has some outright dynamite passages where his collection of philosophies are enjoined into the fabric of these lives that spend most of their time drinking, fighting, whoring, & dealing with weather & mud that should kill most. Some absolutely brilliant phrasing & technique where it's written so gracefully & lightly, that it could have been a butterfly assigned the duty to kiss you with the words. Much like the series, but it has its own story. A great book, well enjoyed. Now to go back & find those gold phrases for posterity.
A great read. It's not the HBO series but it's just as dark and moody and twice as entertaining, but focused on Bill Hickock. the old west unvarnished and gritty and human as only Peter Dexter could write it. I highly recommend this for fans of literary fiction and/or the old west. This book would be worth the read just for Calamity Jane, she is a very colorful character!
WOW!! One of the best reads EVER!! I could hardly put this book down. The character study was spectacular. Obviously David Mich and HBO stole the characters from this book for their TV. Maybe not the story of the show entirely, but the characters for certain. How Pete Dexter did not get any credit for the TV show just blows me away.
Anyways, this book was one of the few reads I was really sad to have to finish. I wanted more!
Please, Pete, another Deadwood of some sorts or maybe another wester mining town book (maybe the town of Bodie, CA?) would be so great to have another one from him!
One of my favorite books of all time and I wished this would be made into a movie. Obviously there must be issues now with HBO and their title of their production but it would be awesome to have this book version made into a movie still with David Carradine back as Wild Bill, especially Dayton Callie as Charley Utter.
I finally got around to this book after talking to fans of the HBO show who complained this wasn’t as good as the series. Clearly they’re different animals, and supposedly the show is unrelated to the novel. The tv show has the western setting but is amped up to reflect a modern viewpoint. The novel is a great work of American fiction which I hope lives on longer and with higher regard than a hyped up modern tv show. I couldn’t put this book down; beautifully written, profane, witty and touching.
